Market Report - August
Vegetables
UK-grown tenderstem hasn’t handled the recent heat well. With local crops struggling, imports have stepped in to fill the gap. This added demand has also put extra pressure on standard broccoli supplies.
Right now is the perfect time to enjoy UK new potatoes. They are at their very best—fresh, full of flavour, and only available for a short season. Get them while you can.
Beetroot is having a moment. UK-grown red, golden, and rainbow varieties are all looking fantastic this month. They’re as beautiful on the plate as they are delicious.
Fresh sweetcorn is in excellent supply. It’s the ideal time to grill it over hot coals and slather it with butter. A real summer showstopper!
Fruit
UK cherries burst onto the scene last month. The season is short and sweet—think sunshine captured in every ruby-red fruit. Now is the time to get them on your menus before they disappear.
Blueberries are often the latecomers in the soft fruit season, but August is making up for lost time.
We’re seeing exceptional berries of all varieties from growers across the UK—blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries. There is no better time of year to enjoy the British summer berry season before it comes to an end.
Toward the end of the month, look out for Turkish figs arriving. These honeyed delights bring exotic flavour and a touch of luxury. Perfect for cheeseboards, desserts, or pairing with salty charcuterie.
Mid-August marks the arrival of UK plums, with the mighty Victorias leading the way. Juicy, vibrant, and full of flavour, they’re perfect for baking, roasting, or enjoying fresh.
Salad
We’re hauling in some cracking salad gear this month with the summer hotting up. Cos, oakleaf, and lollo are looking superb — and if you haven’t tried radicchio yet, you are missing something very special! It’s bold, bitter and beautiful, and it’s set to keep rolling in through August.
Tomatoes are still in great supply with plenty of varieties to suit everything from posh starters to budget banquets. One product to give serious thought to is samphire.
This salty little crunch bomb is landing daily and is a killer way to dial up flavour and texture in salads. Raw, butter-glazed, or lightly steamed — it’s pure coastal flavoured magic on a plate.
Baby spinach leaves are also looking top-notch right now: vibrant colour, tender texture, and ready to slide into salads. Radish is punching well above its weight too — peppery, crisp, and perfect for slicing thin to bring some bite and colour to the plate.
